Christmas to New Years – A Holly-Jolly Custom Wildflower Mixture

For most people who have pursued a lifelong interest in and practice of gardening, their introduction to gardening came as a young child. Someone in that child’s family, a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, devoted neighbor took the time to garden with that child. Successful results produced the happiest of memories, and those memories inspired a lifelong passion for gardening.

Today, we rarely have the time to spend hours throughout the growing season sharing the experience of learning to garden with a child or our children. That is why we have created this wildflower mix.

The days between Christmas and New Years are a singular period of time where families are often together. This wildflower mix was designed for parents/grandparents/aunts and uncles to share with their children. During the week between Christmas and New Years the adults can take their children to a garden spot (approximately 10 feet by 10 feet) which they have prepared sometime during the fall by simply turning the soil and raking it smooth. The children can then be given handfuls of seeds which they can broadcast all over the garden spot. They can dance over the garden spot sprinkling their seeds everywhere, or they can stand at the edge and fan the seeds around the garden spot. Once the seeds have been sprinkled around the garden area, they can be watered in – just once. For the rest of the winter, the seeds should be left alone.

All of the seeds in this collection grow best when they are planted in late fall or early winter. They do not need to be dug in. Broadcasting the seeds across the area is all that needs to be done. In the spring as the green sprouts emerge from the soil, the excitement begins and reaches a crescendo during mid-summer with an abundance of blooms across the entire garden spot.

Most of the seeds in this collection are poppies and lupines with some other native American cultivars. The blossoms that these seeds produce as plants are intensely and unforgettably colorful, but it is the memories created by this delightful little exercise that are the real seeds, and these seeds can grow into a lifelong passion for gardening for both children and adults.

Planting Wildflower Seeds in the Fall for Glorious Spring and Summer Color

Planting wildflower seed is very easy. Prepare the ground where the wildflowers are to be planted by gently turning the soil and raking it even. Broadcast the seed over the area as you would with grass seed and then water it in. You do not have to cover the seed, but if you want you can rake the seeds into the surface of the soil.

If planting wildflower seed in the early spring, keep the ground moist until the seed has sprouted and grown to 2-3 inches.

If planting wildflower seed in the fall, water on the day the seed has been planted and then do not water any more until the seed has sprouted in the spring.

Most wildflower seed does better when planted in the fall so that it can experience a prolonged period of cold. If trying to plant wildflower seed in Hardiness Zones 8-10, refrigerate the seed for 6 weeks before planting.
