Researchers now believe, based on biochemical and molecular markers from the most primitive fertile garlic strains identified by collectors, that garlic originated on the northwestern side of the Tien Shan in Central Asia. It began to be cultivated in that area and then was transported to China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkmenistan. TURBAN GARLIC, Xian – Allium sativum var. sativum FULL SUN Native to south-central Asia, garlic was probably domesticated from a single variety, Allium longicuspis, thousands of years ago. Today the plant is grown on every continent except Antarctica. Xian is a delicious favorite of garlic expert, Chester Aaron, and a garlic of some mystery. Purportedly Aaron purchased this garlic in San Francisco’s Chinatown for $30 a bulb in 2001. However, a Xian garlic was offered by the Seed Savers’ Exchange in 1999 and Greg Czarnecki, a seed saver member claims to have purchased this garlic in 1992 in Chinatown.
